Butterfly Maiden by Hopi Master Carver Milton Howard
Butterfly Maiden by Hopi Master Carver Milton Howard
Also known as Butterfly Girl or Poli Mana.
She is a social dancer. She does not wear a face, but has an elaborate tableau headdress and usually her eyes are covered by her bangs. Only unmarried girls without children perform her dance.
The social dances constitute prayers to the kachinas for the benefits of good health and good harvest. The girls dancing are likened to butterflies and the dance is held in August when the butterflies are present.
Milton carves in several sizes: tiny, mini, small, medium, large, and extra large.
